We are delighted to announce that 5G Metro has been selected as a finalist for the 2026 World Smart City Awards in the Enabling Technologies category. The awards recognise innovative projects from around the world that use technology to address real-world challenges. This international recognition highlights 5G Metro’s approach to hybrid private 5G, exploring how advanced, reliable and low-latency connectivity can enable new services and uses, particularly in higher education.
The winners will be announced during the Smart City Expo World Congress (SCEWC), taking place in Barcelona from 3 to 5 November 2026. The 5G Metro consortium will be there to present the project and its flagship use case: telepresence robots supporting students who cannot physically attend university, helping them remain connected not only to their classes, but also to their peers and campus life. Being shortlisted for the World Smart City Awards is an important opportunity to share the project’s experience internationally and demonstrate how next-generation connectivity can serve more inclusive and accessible environments.
